Who is this course for?
This course is a workshop open to counsellors whether qualified or in training, and related professions. It is an exploratory rather than a teaching exercise aimed at learning through participants’ shared ideas and experiences. Shame is rarely a presenting issue in counselling. However, it is often hidden, emerging in the course of work on more readily addressed issues such as low self-esteem, abuse, bullying, disability, and addiction. This workshop explores the challenges of working around a feeling which inhibits expression yet pervades a wide range of sources of dis-ease.
Outcomes for attendees
- To understand the nature of Shame, particularly its relationship to guilt and humiliation.
- To have a recognition of the ambiguities of Shame: a ‘capacity for shame’ - healthy; feeling ‘shameful’ - unhealthy; ‘shamelessness’ - pathological.
- To introduce and discuss approaches to discovering and ‘detoxifying’ a client’s feelings of Shame.
- To have an awareness, in working with shame, of possible implications regarding confidentiality and safeguarding.
Peter has been a counsellor for twenty years working at CFC and previously at a university counselling service. He has also worked with people with Asperger Syndrome.
