Aims, content and training areas
Aims of the Course
Rather than viewing self-harm as a diagnosis, the session frames it as a survival strategy, a vital lens for understanding the emotional, psychological, and social pain behind the behaviour. We will explore the deep roots of stigma and shame, and how these barriers often prevent people from seeking help. Through guided discussion, attendees will learn how to respond with empathy, presence, and respect, creating safer spaces for connection.
Course Content
The workshop blends real-world tools with structured risk guidance, from practical coping alternatives to clear frameworks for assessing and responding to suicide risk. Case studies bring theory to life, helping practitioners turn insight into grounded, confident action. We will cover essential legal, ethical, and organisational responsibilities, clarifying when and how to escalate concerns, and how to document risk with care. We understand that because this work takes an emotional toll, the session places strong emphasis on practitioner wellbeing, offering practical strategies to maintain resilience, balance, and support.
Ideal for anyone in a helping role, this training builds not only skill, but heart, strength, and connection in the face of distress.
